Bladder Cancer Foundation of Florida Asking Legislature To Recognize May 2018 as “Bladder Cancer Awareness Month”

The Bladder Cancer Foundation of Florida has asked the Florida Legislature to recognize May 2018 as “Bladder Cancer Awareness Month”.

Here is the proposed language for the resolution.


A resolution designating May 2018 as “Bladder Cancer Awareness Month” in Florida.

WHEREAS, according to the National Cancer Institute, bladder cancer is the 6th most common cancer in the United States, and, (1)

WHEREAS, among the states Florida has the second-highest average number of bladder cancer diagnoses per year as of 2017, and, (4)

WHEREAS, bladder cancer is the fourth most common cancer in men (11) and approximately 587,000 people in the United States live with bladder cancer, and

WHEREAS, men have a 1 in 26 chancer and women have a 1 in 88 chances of being diagnosed with bladder cancer in their lifetime, and (6)

WHEREAS, in 2017 approximately 76,960 new cases of bladder cancer were diagnosed, and nearly 16,390 (1) people were estimated to have died due this disease, in the United States, and

WHEREAS, although bladder cancer can occur at any age, a high percentage of people suffering from the disease are over the age of 55, and (7)

WHEREAS, even though bladder cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the united states is ranked 18th in research money received as of 2014 and, (14)

WHEREAS, smoking (2) and exposure to certain chemicals (8) may increase a person’s likelihood of developing bladder cancer, and

WHEREAS, because diagnosis can frequently be delayed, which may cause a worse prognosis, due people not being aware of the vague early signs and symptoms of bladder cancer and they should discuss with their doctors concerns about their urinary system, NOW THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the House of the State of Florida:

That May 2018 be recognized as “Bladder Cancer Awareness Month” in Florida.
